The Idea of Yin and Yang

Oct 28, 2024

The aspects of running are endless. Factors that affect performance might be air quality, running gear, stress, terrain... to name just a few. But at Vortza, we are convinced there is one thing not to underestimate: the importance of rest.

In Harmony

Basically, it is all about balance, similar to Yin and Yang. According to Brittanica 'Yinyang describes the two complementary forces – yin and yang – that make up all aspects and phenomena of life. It encompasses the actual process of the universe and all that is in it.' Yin represents the earth, tranquility, stillness, and the dark. Yang is the part that equals fire, energy, light, strength, and moving forward.

Yin and Yang are supposedly opposites with all their differences. The word 'supposedly' is carefully chosen because opposites suggest these two elements are incompatible, while that is not the case: They definitely do work in unison. Yin and Yang enhance or emphasize each other's qualities and exist in harmony. The two put together make up a wholesome, well-working system. Think of it as no day without night, just like no workout without rest. But why do you need that balance for sports?

Slowing Down to be Able to Sprint

Generally speaking, you need rest for recovery and to prevent injury. During recovery, your fluid balance returns to its original level, your muscles rebuild their tissue, your body temperature will be regulated, and waste products will be removed.

When you want to prepare well for a race, your training must include some high-quality (read: hard) workouts. The fresher your legs are, the more you’ll benefit from these workouts.
Similarly, starting your big (half) marathon with a fully rested body is essential for optimal performance (and enjoyment!), which is why reducing your training load in the last weeks before such an event is beneficial.

Your body isn't made for continuous performance, day after day, week after week. It needs a cycle with both elements in harmony. It needs the principle of rest between workouts. Vortza allows plenty of time for recovery within your schedule, adapted to your personal goal. And since our latest release, we have included new achievements with the elements of Yin that reward you for observing your rest. So, if you have not already... why not download the app and try it?
